The Wewerka Pavilion: built by Stefan Wewerka in 1986 for the documenta 8. Behind its glass walls: 4 video screens facing outward. They are set on pedestals made of square galvanized pipes (the material that the Pavilion’s skeleton is made of). They show the view into the Pavilion, as if they weren’t there. But they also show - within the Pavilion - a white human figure of indefinite sex, no hair, shimmering like mother of pearl. With its charm and presence it tries to lull the viewers into realizing that the space it moves in and that the viewers see with their own eyes, is unreal. It invites the consumer of art to exchange his/her body with its own. Hypnotised by its speed, rhythm and the insistence of its presence, one accepts more of the virtual other’s proposal than one is prepared to admit to oneself.
